This album was…difficult. Difficult to write, difficult to make, difficult to stick with, and difficult to finish. I almost didn't release it. It's just so...raw. Every track is built upon a single take with just a voice and a guitar, and built up from there. I'm sure you can hear the rawness in it, and I fought the perfectionist inside myself to leave the edges bare.
A lot of people have asked me what the title means, so I'll try to define it here:
Essential Näiveté is something we all share. It's the thing that pushes us forward, outside, beyond ourselves. The impulse to create beautiful, unnecessary things, to take a leap of faith, to pull ourselves up and out from the bottom, to fall headlong in love. Essential Näiveté is the instinct to believe in impossible, to lay ourselves on the line, and to push on, in spite of all the evidence to the contrary.
I want to thank all the friends, loves lost, and loves gained, who supported me during the creation of this album. Those whose enthusiasm for my work reignited the fire in me enough to take the next tiny step, again and again.
I suffered in different ways for every one of these songs. And I like them. Some of them I even love. I hope they inspire you to embrace your own Essential Näiveté. To do what they said can’t be done. To create beautiful, unnecessary things. To take a leap of faith. To pull yourself up, and out, and over. And to fall, headlong and proud, in spite of it all, into love.
